Introduction

Welcome to my blog. Because it’s still the beginning of the semester, I’m going to start with my name, hometown, and major. My name is Casey Aikman and I chose to go to North Central because of the location, community, wrestling program, and academic opportunities.

I’m from Ukiah, a small town in northern California, also known as U-town. Ukiah is about 3 hours north of San Francisco and 1 hour away from Fort Bragg, the nearest coast. There are nice beaches, but it’s always cold and covered in fog, even in the summer. If you want to swim, it’s better to go to a lake. Although, only the deepest lakes are left because the rest dry up every year. Ukiah is in its own valley so there’s a mountain range surrounding it in every direction. This means good views, but it also means steep, winding roads and spending a lot of gas which is already more expensive than it is in any other state. Ukiah is also part of the redwood empire. I have a redwood tree in my backyard and the state park is only 30 minutes away. Redwoods can grow up to 300ft tall, and only grow naturally in northern California and Southern Oregon.

I’m majoring in Exercise Science and following the Pre-Physical Therapy program. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I plan on getting my masters, while hopefully coaching as a graduate assistant wrestling coach. After that, I’ll probably go on to physical therapy school. Since my sophomore year of high school, I’ve had 4 knee surgeries and 3 of those have taken place in the last year. I’ll be wrestling again soon because of the guidance and support I’ve had from my physical therapist and athletic trainer. I’ve always been interested in biomechanics and exercise science, but the impact my physical therapist had on my recovery has motivated me to have the same impact on others in my situation.

Naps Are Good

In class today, I spent a lot of time doing research and developed a thesis for my rational argument essay. I decided to to only focus on the benefits of naps, rather than discussing any controversy. My thesis states: Contrary to what many people think, naps can be very beneficial if done the right way.  I decided to only focus on the positive side of naps after having a long conversation with Dr. Kyburz. While talking, I discovered that I really enjoy naps. I take a nap almost every day, and they are usually good. Because of this, it will be much easier to argue for the benefits of napping rather than arguing both sides.  My argument will be much more genuine, making it more enjoyable to write and read. I will also be able to get deeper into the topic because I'm only arguing one side. For each source I quote, I will have a deep dive into how in contributes to my thesis. I will also discuss some challenges with naps, but I'll write about them as challenges to overcome i...

Chasing Coral

A specific scene that stood out to me was the part when the corals unusually started glowing neon. No one knew why this was happening at first, but they found that the corals did this in order to protect themselves from climate change. The bright colors reflect the light, reducing the heat that the corals absorb. This is fascinating but also very sad because they are only doing this because they are so close to dying. Turning neon is their last stand against the rising temperature of their habitat.    It surprised me that coral are considered animals, not plants. And they are also very very big. I thought corals were tiny things living together, but they are very big in reality. Corals are made up of thousands of things called polyps and they all have mouths and stomachs just like animals. They also coexist with plants that live on top of them. These plant cells make food that the corals can eat. Another thing that surprised me was the fact that parrotfish e...

Naps Rational Argument

Since developing my thesis that naps are good, I've finished my first rough draft. Although I put it off a long time, the actual writing process has been fairly easy. I think this is due to the fact that I have a strong interest in my topic and I'm somewhat passionate about proving that naps are beneficial.       My will to prove that naps are good is mostly because of how personal they are to me. I take a nap most days. This makes my argument partially biased, but I don't think that's a bad thing. My positive experience taking naps contributes greatly to my argument because it appeals to, ethos and pathos. I have credibility because I personally take naps. I also appeal to emotion because I know how it feels when I need to take a nap and how much better I feel afterwards. In order to appeal more to logos, I found multiple studies on the topic.      It hasn't been hard to find studies and articles backing my claim that naps are beneficial...
